About us - Noriko Kobayashi Ballet Theatre

Noriko Kobayashi Ballet Theatre was founded in 1973 by Koh Kobayashi as a classical ballet company in Mejiro, Tokyo. The company's creative approach over the years, including a succession of performances of outstanding international repertoires, such as Macmillan and Ashton and classics, has made it one of the most highly regarded ballet companies in Japan, winning the Grand Prize of the Agency for Cultural Affairs, the Dance Critics Society Award, and being nominated for the Best Stage of the Year Award by Dance Europe. Throughout the company's half-century history, it has produced many dancers who have gone on to perform internationally, and has worked with many world-renowned directors, artists and conductors. In recent years, the company has taken the initiative to use arts and culture as good practice for the SDGs, and to train the next generation of dancers and artists for the future of ballet in Japan at the ballet school attached to the company.
In Tokyo season, the company has appeared mainly at the New National Theatre, successfully performed "Ballet Opening Gala" at the memorable opening ceremony of HAREZA Ikebukuro Theatres in the district where the company is based, and "East Asian Ballet for Future" for the "East Asian Cultural City 2019 Toshima" project. In addition to performing, the company has also developed performances and educational programs using ballet throughout Japan. To date, the company has performed in about 80 cities, towns and villages across Japan, creating a wide range of opportunities for young people to experience high-standard performing arts, and carrying out activities that contribute to the development of a rich cultural living environment and the realization of a vibrant society, as well as growing good relationships with local communities and people involved in culture and the arts.
Noriko Kobayashi, the artistic director of the company, has been in her current position since 1983.
